About
Crown Farm Quarry
Location
Situated about 6 miles to the south-west of Northwich, Crown Farm Quarry is located north of the A556 (Chester Road) and Oakmere village, with Stoneyford Lane to the east and Station Road to the west.
The quarry currently covers approximately 135 hectares (333 acres) of land. Over 20 hectares (50 acres) of this is land known as the Crown Farm Nature Reserve, which is land that has already been quarried and then restored. The nature reserve is managed by the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, with funding from Tarmac, and is the site of frequent educational visits.
What does the quarry do?
We operate two distinct product lines from Crown Farm,- a washed sand from within Delamere Lake to the west of the site, and a dry screened sand from within the dry dig area towards Crabtree Green to the east of the site.
These high-quality sands are used for concrete, asphalt and mortar production in houses, schools and other buildings, and also in road surfacing. These products supply customers in the building and construction sectors across the north-west of England and North Wales.
Also within the quarry is an aggregate bagging plant that produces bagged products for the major DIY outlets within the north- west.
The quarry currently has planning permission for the quarrying of sand and the use of the bagging plant until February 2042, with restoration of the site to follow. At current rates of extraction, however, the existing reserves of sand will be exhausted by around 2031.
Due to continued demand for our sand from the construction industry in the region and following a recent change in operating processes, we are looking to submit a planning application to both deepen and widen the quarry, so that we can maximise the available reserves of sand without needing to extend beyond the current site boundary. This will enable us to prolong the life of the quarry, while meeting current regional demand to the currently permitted end date for minerals extraction of 2042.
